Enshrouded Review: A Voxel Survival RPG Full of Freedom and Adventure

Few survival games give players as much freedom as Enshrouded. Set in the fallen kingdom of Embervale, this open-world action RPG blends base building, exploration and combat into one cohesive adventure. This Enshrouded review covers the story, gameplay, visuals and system requirements. It also explains whether the game deserves a place in your library.

The timing is ideal. Keen Games will end Early Access on October 15, 2026, with the full 1.0 release arriving on PC and PlayStation 5. After more than two years of updates, the game has attracted millions of players, and 1.0 is its biggest step yet.

What Is Enshrouded?

Enshrouded is a survival, crafting and action RPG set on a huge voxel-based continent. Keen Games, the German studio behind Portal Knights, developed and published it.

Three pillars define the experience: exploration, base building and flexible combat. Each one supports the others. You can explore alone or team up with friends in online co-op.

Enshrouded Story

Embervale was once a rich and prosperous kingdom. Its rulers discovered a magical Elixir, and their hunger for its power grew without limit. They dug deep wells to get more of it. Their greed released a deadly fog known as the Shroud, which spreads across the land and consumes everything in its path.

In response, humans joined forces with the ancients to create the Flameborn. You are that hero. You wake alone after a long sleep, guided by a small flame. Your mission is to find the source of the Shroud and restore hope to Embervale.

The story unfolds through journals and clues scattered across the world. You can follow it closely or simply enjoy the journey. Either way, the mystery behind the Shroud keeps you moving forward.

Enshrouded Gameplay and Game Logic

The core loop is simple and rewarding. You gather resources, craft gear, build a base, explore the world, fight enemies and level up. Every activity feeds into the next, so progress always feels natural.

The Shroud: Risk and Reward

The Shroud is the most important mechanic in the game. These fog-filled zones hide rare loot, valuable materials and tougher enemies. Your flame protects you, but only for a limited time.

As a result, each visit becomes a short expedition. You dive in, collect what you can and return before the timer runs out. This tension makes every trip exciting, and it encourages you to go a little deeper each time.

Building Without Limits

Building is where Enshrouded stands out from other survival games. The voxel engine lets you place blocks and furniture with great precision. You can also reshape the terrain, carve out foundations and build multi-level houses or fortresses on cliffs.

You can even use explosives to change the landscape. Because of this freedom, no two bases look the same.

Crafting and NPC Artisans

As you explore, you rescue artisans who settle in your base. Each one unlocks new crafting stations and upgrades.

  • The blacksmith offers advanced metalwork.
  • The carpenter provides refined building pieces.
  • The alchemist brings potions and magical upgrades.

Thanks to these characters, your settlement feels like a living place. An early magic chest also gives your crafting stations direct access to your materials, which saves a lot of time.

Combat and Skills

Combat supports several playstyles. You can fight as a melee warrior, an archer, a mage or a flexible hybrid. Dodging, parrying and spellcasting all play a role.

Leveling up earns skill points that unlock permanent stats and new abilities. Examples include a double jump, a teleport dodge, counters and sneak attacks. If you want to try a different style, you can reset your skills at your home base.

Food gives temporary buffs, but on standard settings you never die from hunger. So you can prepare for your next adventure at your own pace.

A Handcrafted World

The world is not randomly generated. Designers placed every ruin, secret and encounter by hand. This makes exploration feel purposeful. You travel through forests, cliffs, deserts, ruins and underground chambers. A glider and grappling hooks make movement fast and fun.

Your Game, Your Difficulty

The game lets you adjust many settings. You can change enemy health and damage, crafting speed and even weapon durability. For a harder challenge, you can choose a preset where food matters. This flexibility makes Enshrouded welcoming to relaxed builders and combat fans alike.

Visuals and Atmosphere

Enshrouded is a beautiful game. Its painterly fantasy style gives each area a clear identity: dense forests, stone ruins, sunlit deserts and glowing Shroud zones.

Lighting does most of the work. Warm sunsets, morning mist and the eerie glow of the Shroud set the mood. Terrain deformation adds even more life. When you carve out a base, the ground reacts in a satisfying way. Crisp building sounds and spell effects complete the atmosphere.

Updates and Reception

Keen Games has supported the game well since its launch in 2024. Eight major updates have added new biomes, a combat overhaul, fishing, transmog and a dynamic water system. They also brought new monsters, weapons, armor and decorations.

Reviewers have praised the building tools, the exploration and the Shroud system. One review site gave Enshrouded a “Recommended” verdict and called it a great adventure for solo players and friends. Another described its building tools as some of the best in the genre.
