Breeder Review: A Poodle Breeder, a Broke Student, and a Very Dark Joke

Content note: This review covers a horror film rated R for disturbing material, bloody violence, sexual content, graphic nudity, and language. Reader discretion is advised.

A friendly dog lover offers a struggling student a big check. What could go wrong? In Breeder, almost everything.

Written and directed by Alex Goyette in his horror debut, Breeder premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2026. It’s a dark, funny, and unsettling thriller, and one of the most original horror premises of the year. Here’s our review.

Breeder Story: The Offer That Comes With a Catch

Russell (Daniel Doheny) is a brilliant college student. He’s close to a major breakthrough: a study that could help save a rare bee species from extinction. His problem is money. He has the idea, but he can’t pay for the research.

Then a wealthy poodle breeder named Patti (Dot-Marie Jones) steps in. She admires his work and promises to be his angel investor. All she asks is that he help with an experiment of her own.

Russell heads to her remote ranch. Of course, there’s a catch. Without spoiling the details, the film turns his research trip into a nightmare about control, perfection, and the lengths people go to for a “better” bloodline.

Why the Premise Works So Well

The best horror feels rooted in real life, and Breeder does. Russell isn’t a fool who walks into a trap for no reason. He’s desperate. The economy is tough, funding is scarce, and a life-changing offer makes red flags look a lot less red.

That makes his choices believable. You understand why he says yes, and you can’t blame him. It’s a smart way to build tension, because the audience stays on his side.

The film also tackles a timely and uncomfortable subject: eugenics. Goyette uses a deranged dog breeder to explore ideas about “perfect” traits and who gets to decide them. It’s provocative, but the story never loses its footing in a real, human situation.

Dot-Marie Jones Steals the Show

The villain is everything in a film like this, and Jones delivers. As Patti, she’s calm, polite, and completely terrifying. She doesn’t rant or scream. She simply believes what she’s doing is right.

That blunt, matter-of-fact attitude is what makes her so scary. Her calm manner recalls classic villains like Annie Wilkes from Misery. You never know when the next shoe will drop, and every scene she’s in crackles with tension.

Doheny holds his own as Russell. He makes the character smart, stubborn, and sympathetic. The film also pays attention to his inner life. You see the pressure he feels about wasting his potential, which gives the story emotional weight.

The supporting cast includes Maddie Phillips, Tanaya Beatty, and Paige McGarvin.

A Slow Burn With a Wicked Sense of Humor

Breeder takes its time. It starts with an ordinary setup and slowly grows more uncomfortable. Patti treats her captive almost like one of her prize dogs, using a trainer’s tone in a hostage situation. That’s both hilarious and horrifying.

The film also explores the bond between pet and owner, and how it can twist into something toxic. Reality slips little by little, and the mood grows stranger.

The dark humor feels natural, never forced. It arrives in small, dry moments, and it makes the horror hit even harder. Fans of Barbarian, Misery, and Dogtooth will find familiar flavors here, though the film feels fresh.

Where Breeder May Split Audiences

No horror film works for everyone, and this one is bold. A few things might divide viewers.

First, the pacing. It’s a slow burn. If you want constant scares, the early stretch may feel quiet.

Second, the ending. The film avoids the easy route, and some viewers may find the final choice frustrating. It feels earned, but it’s the type of ending people will argue about.

Third, the content. The subject matter is extreme, and the R rating covers sexual content, nudity, and bloody images. This isn’t a casual Friday-night watch.

Who Should Watch Breeder

This is a strong pick for horror fans who enjoy dark comedy, slow-burn tension, and strong villains. It’s also a good choice if you like low-budget, single-location horror that makes the most of its setting.

If you dislike disturbing themes or unsettling sexual content, skip it.

The Verdict

Breeder is a sharp, funny, and deeply unsettling debut. It pairs a memorable villain with a smart, timely idea, and it never plays things safe. For fans of daring horror, it’s well worth the trip.

Rating: 4/5
