Video game movies are a troubled genre. It was in 1993 that Hollywood decided to bring video games to the big screen, but critics have never been kind to video game movies since then. It can be because of questionable choices, the audience reviewers weren’t fans of the franchise, troubled productions, or the movie was bad. Still, Hollywood has not stopped from putting video games based movies out there. The genre of video game movies is filled with three types of movies. Some fall in the should’ve-been-goods, the near-decent, and finally, the ridiculous-but-we-love-thems. From 2019 to 2022, only four video game films had a “fresh” (60% or above) rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Those were The Angry Birds, Detective Picachu, and Sonic The Hedgehog 1 and 2. These movies officially broke the video game curse and put all the trouble that Mario Bros movie started to an end. In 2021, Werewolves Within made a mark as by far the best-reviewed video game movie! Warcraft (2016), Rampage (2018), Detective Pikachu (2019), Uncharted (2022), and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) have succeeded in accumulating a massive box-office gross of more than $400 million worldwide. Seems like video game movies have now stepped in the right direction, after all.
