Crawlers Review: A Spider-Infested Apartment Building and No Way Out

Spiders are scary enough when there’s one on the wall. Crawlers asks what happens when there are thousands of them, and the police have sealed the building.
Directed by Ángel Gómez Hernández, Crawlers is a creature-feature horror film starring Matilda Lutz. It opens in US theaters on October 16, 2026. Here’s our review of what’s coming.
Crawlers Story: Locked In With the Spiders
Serena (Matilda Lutz) is the overworked and underappreciated manager of the Paradiso Palms apartment complex. Nobody thanks her for the long hours. Then she discovers a mysterious death inside the building.
It’s only the beginning. A catastrophic infestation of venomous, deadly spiders is spreading through the complex. The police respond with a quarantine, and Serena and the residents are trapped inside.
The creatures multiply by the second. Serena has one advantage: she knows the building better than anyone. She may be the only person who can keep the tenants alive, but only if she can face her own deepest fear. The film’s own description makes clear that her fear is spiders.
Why the Setup Works
A single apartment building is a smart place for a horror story. It’s small, familiar, and full of tight spaces. Hallways, stairwells, vents, and walls give spiders plenty of places to hide.
The quarantine adds pressure. Nobody can leave, nobody can get help, and the threat keeps growing. That kind of trapped-in-one-place setup has worked for horror films for decades.
The film also gives its hero a personal fear. Serena isn’t a fearless fighter. She’s afraid of spiders, and she must work through that fear to survive. That gives the story an emotional hook beyond the scares.
Matilda Lutz Leads the Fight
Lutz is a good fit for the role. Horror fans know her from Revenge and Rings.
Here, her character is more of an everyday survivor than an action hero. That should make the story easier to connect with. Serena isn’t a soldier. She’s a worker who knows every corridor, and that knowledge is her weapon.
The cast includes Gregg Sulkin, Melina Matthews, William Miller, Chris Rogers, and Isabella Egizi, who play the tenants and others trapped in the building. Jayson Rothwell wrote the screenplay.
A Tight Runtime and an R Rating
The film runs just 81 minutes. That’s short, and it suits this kind of story. A creature feature works best when it doesn’t overstay its welcome.
The MPA rated Crawlers R for violent content and bloody images, language, and brief sexual material. That suggests the film isn’t holding back. If you want a gentle spider story, this isn’t it.
Crawlers is also the first feature from Badlands, a new company formed by Thunder Road, the team behind John Wick and Sicario, and producer Scott Strauss, whose credits include Resident Evil and Underworld. That’s a strong track record for genre films.
What Could Go Wrong
Every creature feature faces the same risks.
First, the spiders themselves. If the effects look fake, the fear can disappear fast. The film needs convincing creatures to work.
Second, the characters. In a story with many tenants, some can feel like spider bait. The film needs to give the audience people worth caring about.
Third, originality. Spider horror has a long history, so Crawlers must find a fresh twist in its building setting and its quarantine setup.
These aren’t flaws yet. They’re simply the things to watch for.
Who Should Watch Crawlers
This looks like a great pick for horror fans who enjoy creature features, claustrophobic settings, and short, fast-moving thrillers. It’s also a fun choice for a group outing in October.
If you’re afraid of spiders, this could be a rough night out. Then again, that’s the whole point.
The Verdict
Crawlers has a simple, effective hook, a strong lead, and a lean runtime. It promises a squirm-in-your-seat creature feature for the Halloween season. If the spiders look as good as the premise sounds, it could be a hit.
Excitement level: 3.5/5
